Mechanical engineering takes the lead when it comes to lot size one // Custom manufacturing makes Germany more attractive as a production location – Study
Better customizability of products up to lot size one is one of the most revolutionary changes arising as a result of Industry 4.0. While many industrial companies are still unsure of how they will tackle customized manufacturing, for 45 percent of companies, this is already the driving force behind digital transformation. The pioneer when it comes to lot size one is the field of mechanical and plant engineering. In this sector, two thirds of companies are already pursuing this new level of customization, as shown by the results of the third Germany Industry 4.0 Index. For this study, a total of 277 industrial companies were surveyed in Germany for the Staufen management consultancy.

A lack of knowledge at the management level is the biggest hurdle when it comes to digitally transforming German industries. Three out of four companies lament their managers’ lack of digital know-how. This ratio has only decreased slightly in the last twelve months. The German plant construction and mechanical engineering companies are still betting on classical service features – they don’t use the innovation potential from the digitalization as optimally as possible. Just about every tenth company pursues consequently a proactive line, checks continuously mechanical processes form their customers and intervenes before trouble causes a machine shutdown. This is what the study “Industrial service in management consultancy” by Staufen AG shows. 154 companies from the plant construction and mechanical engineering industry were asked.
