Still plenty of potential for ecological management among suppliers / Current Green Indices show a large gap between talking and taking action in the automotive industry – Automotive Study

Köngen – The potential for ecologically sustainable management has yet to be exhausted in the automotive industry Nine out of ten companies still have some catching up to do in this regard, as is clearly shown in the recent study “Green Transformation in the Automotive Industry”. To find out, the automotive experts at the management consultancy Staufen surveyed more than 250 OEMs and suppliers from the automotive industry in Germany.

“Our study shows that not only the automotive manufacturers, but the suppliers as well have a great amount of potential for optimizing their ecological measures”, says Dr. Thilo Greshake, Director of the Automotive division at Staufen. As a means to identify the most important levers, Staufen AG reviewed the results of the survey of a total of 267 OEMs and suppliers to derive two Green Indices: the Green Awareness Index and the Green Maturity Index.

The first key indicator, represented as a decimal value between one and four, indicates the extent to which each of the companies have been able to recognize sustainability and ecology as a challenge for their business and which factors drive implementation. The second key indicator describes the degree of maturity of the sustainability options in each of the companies. What was included in the calculation were details relating to the progress of the implementation, the depth of penetration as well as the diversity of topics.

Currently, the Green Awareness Index is at 3.23 points, which clearly shows: Sustainability, ecology and climate protection have arrived in the automotive industry. The number of companies left with a low awareness for these topics are now only few and far between. However, this alone does not necessarily translate into taking fast action, because at 2.36 points, the Green Maturity Index is more on the low side. Here, though, the maturity level on a corporate level (2.70) is slightly higher than in the supply chain (2.02).

OEMs are more open to green transformation than suppliers

A major obstacle to greater sustainability in the automotive industry is the apparent lack of economic viability of many ecological measures. A good three quarters of the companies surveyed for this study do admit that for them their commercial mindset supersedes their mindset for ecological issues.

Nonetheless, both OEMs as well as their suppliers place high value in a supply chain that is ecologically oriented. Here, the OEMs consider themselves to be pioneers. More than 60 percent of them have already defined a sustainability rating as an award criterion in the supplier selection process. By comparison: Among the suppliers, this only applies to 40 percent of them in their own supplier selection.

The numbers confirm the results of the Green Maturity Index: The OEMS are much more open to green transformation. Almost nine in ten OEMs see themselves as strongly committed in this regard, whereas among suppliers it is only one in two. This relates especially to the lower levels in the supply chain; “Tier 2” sub-suppliers and lower clearly have some catching up to do.

And the suppliers are certainly aware of this. Their own suppliers are oftentimes less cooperative and committed to ecological aspects. However, this does not mean that the individual links of the supply chain do nothing at all. Yet, according to the Staufen Study, their efforts have in the past been more focused on saving energy and materials, so aspects that are economically relevant and which also have a cost-reducing effect. Nonetheless, in terms of CO2 neutrality in particular, the suppliers still have a lot to get done.

“When viewing this gradation of OEMs down to the deeper links of the supply chain, what becomes clear is essentially the influence of end customers,” says automotive expert Greshake “A higher market value increases the efforts with respect to sustainability, given that ecological issues generally flow into purchasing decisions. Still, the OEMS can only go down this path by working together with their suppliers and their supply chains.”
