Management’s knowledge gaps hinder digital transformation – Industry 4.0 Study
A lack of knowledge at the management level is the biggest hurdle when it comes to digitally transforming German industries. Three out of four companies lament their managers’ lack of digital know-how. This ratio has only decreased slightly in the last twelve months. It is important that this knowledge gap be closed more quickly than ever. There is an increased urgency for managers to lead their employees into the digital future. However, up to this point, many do not think highly of their managers. This according to the results of the third German Industry 4.0 index. A total of 277 industrial companies and 1,000 employees were surveyed in Germany for the Staufen management consultancy.

German mechanical engineering companies optimistic despite great challenges – Industry discusses answers to globalization and digitalization at the Mechanical Engineering Congress – Outlook 2017
German mechanical engineering companies approach 2017 with optimism. According to the German Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA), an end of stagnation is in sight. The continuous improvement of processes together with a change in leadership culture within companies is producing an increasingly positive effect. In addition, the around 100 senior managers and industry experts attending the Staufen AG Mechanical Engineering Congress agreed that interconnectedness and digitalization offer enormous opportunities for successfully facing future challenges.

On Tuesday night the Consultancy company Staufen has been awarded again with the „Best of Consulting“ prize by „Wirtschaftswoche“. The German plant construction and mechanical engineering companies are still betting on classical service features – they don’t use the innovation potential from the digitalization as optimally as possible. Just about every tenth company pursues consequently a proactive line, checks continuously mechanical processes form their customers and intervenes before trouble causes a machine shutdown. Mechanical engineering firms have difficulties with large-scale orders – Project management weak spot
Faster, bigger, more complex – the business of mechanical and plant engineering is undergoing long-lasting change. Customers are no longer requesting just individual machines, but also the assembly of complete turnkey systems, ready for operation. Mechanical engineering sector bet on lean management for their batch size 1 – Study
Flexibility until batch size 1, gain significance. Three out of four mechanical engineering corporations are convinced that with the help of Lean Management it is easier to manage the individual desires from clients. Already today, a majority of the corporations record a higher productivity as well as a reduced lead time. These are the results of the study “25 Years of Lean Management” from the management consultancy Staufen. In cooperation with the TU Darmstadt, approximately 1500 executives, from industrial companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, were interviewed, 350 of them were from mechanical engineering corporations.
